My Story

Katherine is a historian of women, gender, economics, civic religion, and popular culture and an art and architectural historian specializing in the Roman and Byzantine periods. She holds Bachelor's degrees in theory and criticism of art and history, a Master's degree in history with a specialization in southern Civil Rights history, and is ABD in a PhD focusing on the history of gender.

Most recently, Katherine's academic focus has been on the history of sexuality and the anthropology of gender, where she works in the tradition of those pioneering women scholars of the 1970s who began to question the masculinist orthodoxies of cultural and social anthropology. She is committed to synthesizing the scholarly research and bringing it to the general public as a means of promoting acceptance of all those who identify as queer as well as encouraging activism to secure equal rights for the entire LGBTQIA+ community.

Katherine's broad and deep knowledge, together with her multi- and interdisciplinary academic experience, allow her to seamlessly combine history, art, literature, anthropology, philosophy, and theory to bring the queer history of Washington, DC alive for her guests.

At heart, Katherine is a vivacious, spunky, and natural-born storyteller who befriends everyone she meets - it's her Deep South nature. She loves meeting guests who attend her tours from all over the world, and she makes it a point to get to know each and every one of them.
